What this Site is:

Welcome to my site. The goal of it is to provide tracking lists of movies for people to refer to or to use for themselves. Many people are using one list or another for recommendations on movies to see. They will be able to find most of them here.

You may be wondering, “What’s the big deal? I’ve been able to create lists on IMDB and Amazon for years and I can track them on the new Letterboxd site I am beta testing.” This thing is, on all of those sites you have to create the list. Sure, someone else may have already created the list you want, but you have to find it among the millions of other lists on those sites. They also require internet access, which may be constant if you live in a big city, but which is less reliable the further out in the country that you get.

If you find a list on this site that is interesting to you, you can easily save it to your computer and have it with you at all times. This also means you can customize it for your unique use.

Why am I doing this? I just started actively working from the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book. I bought a copy way back in 2003 and I had checked off in it which movies I had seen. I recently joined an organization of bloggers who review movies from the book. (You can find much more about it, as well as the blog club that has been formed, by reading my post on it here.)

I needed a better way to track what I had seen, had reviewed, that the club had reviewed, etc., so I built my own tracking sheet. I also researched what movies I had yet to see that were available via Netflix. At some point a light bulb went on over my head and I realized there were probably others that would like to have a tracking sheet like this, but didn’t have the time to build it. I was going to post it at my main site – Tips from Chip – but then I stopped to think about other lists I had used over the years. Why not share those, too? I kept going with these ideas and the result is the site you are now on.

How to Use It:

I have a post titled “News and Updates” just below this one. I intend this to be a static site (no new posts), but I will need to periodically correct, update, or expand the contents of the current posts as lists evolve. When I do I will update the News and Updates post to keep you informed on when something changes.

I then have ten posts breaking the various tracking lists into related groupings. Those posts are:

Inside each of these posts you will find an overview and from one to as many as a few dozen tracking sheets available to be viewed and saved to your computer. Clicking on an icon will open the sheet for you. Most of them actually have multiple lists in them that you can see by clicking on the Tabs at the very bottom of the sheet.

Every tracking sheet has a “Seen?” column. If you decide to save one for your own use, just place a “1” in the ‘Seen?” column beside the movies you have watched and it automatically totals down at the bottom. There is also a percentage seen calculated for you.

Please note that the “Year” column has the year of release if it is a regular list, but has the year of the win/nomination if it is an awards list.

In order to save one of these tracking lists to your own computer, open it, select File, then Download a Copy. It should then ask you where you want to save it to on your computer.
Chip Laryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-279913605827537838.post-53927958743211648842012-05-11T14:14:00.000-04:002016-01-01T17:52:18.564-05:00News and UpdatesThis post will contain notes on what corrections, updates, and expansions I have made to any of the lists and other posts. If you have not visited in a while, check here to see what may have changed.

January 1, 2016 - I have embedded the latest IMDB Year Ending Top 250 Weighted Ranking list. It now incorporates 20 years into the rankings. There are now 670 unique movies on the list.

September 26, 2015 - I have uploaded the newest 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list with the 2015 additions made to it.

March 1, 2015 - I have embedded the 2015 They Shoot Pictures Don't They list, along with new lists of the films formerly on it, and the next 1,000 films ranked after the first 1,000. I also embedded up to date lists for the Oscars and Golden Globes. Finally, I added Empire's Top 301 Films of All Time list in the Publishing post. I still need to update the lists for the Countries, the Festivals, and the Miscellaneous movies lists with the latest winners.

January 1, 2015 - I have embedded the latest IMDB Year Ending Top 250 Weighted Ranking list. It now incorporates a 17th year into the rankings. There are now 564 unique movies on the list.

October 21, 2014 - I uploaded the newest version of the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die with the latest additions for 2014.

January 3, 2014 - I uploaded the newly updated IMDB Consolidated and Weighted Top 250 list. It now includes the 2013 year end list for a total of 16 years worth of rankings. Seventeen films appeared on the list for the first time and several more returned. It now has 552 unique films on it.

December 1, 2013 - I uploaded a new tracking sheet for Roger Ebert's Great Films. It is in the Critics' Lists post.

September 24, 2013 - I uploaded a new 1,001 Movies tracking sheet that includes all the changes made by the newly released Tenth Edition of the book. Details of those changes can be found in the post itself.

July 10, 2013 - I have done a massive mid-year update of most of the tracking lists in order to present the most recent additions to them. In addition I completed the entire 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list, so I updated that as well. I did add a new tracking sheet for those movies that had Oscar winning directors or acting performances in them. You can find that in the Oscars and Golden Globes post. I also added Netflix availability columns to the 1,001 Movies Additions from the 101 Genre Lists sheet.

April 11, 2013 - Thanks to Anders and marie_dressler, both of whom kindly shared their research with me, the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die tracking sheet now has up-to-date Netflix Instant Viewing information - including a new column showing when the entry will expire from Instant Viewing - as well as a new column showing the up-to-date Hulu Plus availability for all of the entries.

April 3, 2013 - The big news is that I have uploaded an entirely rebuilt They Shoot Pictures Don't They tracking sheet from the recently issued 2013 edition. It has major changes both in content and presentation. It still has tabs for the current Top 1,000 in ranked and alphabetical order, plus all 395 films that used to be on the Top 1,000, plus a tab that combines all of these films into a single tracking list. To these I added columns for the director, country of origin, and runtime, and then added tabs that have the Top 1,000 sorted by descending runtime and alphabetical by director. In the Publishing Companies post I added three tracking sheets from Empire Magazine - the Top 500 Films, the Top 100 World Films, and the Top 100 British Films.

March 10, 2013 - I have made a number of updates to this site. It was pointed out to me that I had an order error in the 1,001 Movies list, with two films swapped around. While correcting this I also checked the order of every other entry and found one more correction that was needed. I have now uploaded a new 1,001 Movies tracking sheet that has these corrections, as well as some updated Netflix availablity information. Along with this I have also uploaded the latest versions of ten other tracking sheets that have had new winners announced since January 3, 2013. Those new tracking sheets are: the Oscars, the Oscar Best Picture Nominees, the Golden Globes, the BAFTAs, the Cesars, Berlinale, the Image Awards, the Independent Spirit Awards, the Annies, and the Razzies. Finally, the latest version of the They Shoot Pictures Don't They list was announced a couple of weeks ago. It will take a considerable amount of work to incorporate it into the tracking sheet I have here, since I will basically be rebuilding everything from scratch. (I don't just have the 1,000 current movies in my tracking sheet; I also have all the films that used to be in the many versions of the TSPDT lists.) I will get the latest and greatest version into my tracking sheet here in time. When I do you will see a new update announcement in this post.

January 3, 2013 - I have made a number of updates to this site. First, all 66 tracking sheets are now moved over to the new hosting site and all should be available for viewing/downloading. Second, I have added new tracking sheets for the Sight & Sound Critics' and Directors' 2012 voting and the Entertainment Weekly Top 100 movies to the Publishing Company Lists post. Third, I added a tracking sheet for the National Film Registry movies to the Miscellaneous post. Fourth, the Consolidated and Weighted IMDB Top 250 list has been updated to contain the films from the 2012 year end. It now spans 15 years. Finally, all tracking sheets for those festivals and countries that handed out awards after I initially placed them here have been updated to include every award through the end of 2012.

October 2, 2012 - I have embedded an updated 1,001 Movies tracking sheet that includes all the changes from the new 2012 edition of the book. I have also added a column that tracks all changes across all editions. In addition, I added a new tracking sheet for the 348 movies across all six 101 Genre books that are unique from the 1,001 Movies list. All eight tracking sheets in the 1,001 Movies post should now be working for everyone.

October 1, 2012 - The hosting site for the tracking sheets I embedded here has decided to not cooperate. I am in the process of transitioning to another site. When things are complete I will post an "all done" message here. If there is a specific one you cannot access and you would prefer not to wait, please leave a comment on that post asking about it and I will move it to the top of my To Do list.

September 3, 2012 - Embedded updated versions of all six 101 [genre] Movies You Must See Before You Die tracking lists. They now have a column indicating if the film in the 101 [genre] list is also in the larger 1,001 Movies list. Note - an updated 1,001 Movies list with not only the changes from the 2012 edition, but also a new column indicating every change to the list from each edition of the book from 2004 to 2012 should be going up some time in October after the 2012 edition is released.

June 7, 2012 - Embedded new 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die tracking list. This version now has a comprehensive list of films available via Netflix, as well as updated information on movies in the 1,001 Movies Blog Club, and a few small corrections.

May 11, 2012 - Launched this site.Chip Laryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00787403805554027107noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-279913605827537838.post-50094454344821519112012-05-11T14:12:00.000-04:002015-09-26T12:22:11.284-04:001,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die (and Related Genre Lists)

The book 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die was first published in 2003. Each year a few more movies are added to the list. (The total now stands at 1,167). Some people are making attempts to see every movie in the book. You can read much more about it, as well as the blog club that has been formed to review movies from this book, by reading my post on it here.

In addition to the “Seen?” column I also have columns that allow tracking and totaling of what films have been reviewed and what their availability is via Netflix and Hulu Plus. These figures are now comprehensive for the entire list. There is also a comments column that tracks all additions and removals across the various editions of the 1,001 Movies books, as well as where the book has incorrect years for some films.

Note that this is the list in the order they appear in the Tenth Edition that came out in 2013. This is the “Chronological” tab at the very bottom. (Because they had some errors in the book, you will find some films that appear out of order by year, but I felt it was important to keep the order from the book.) Just to the right of the Chronological tab is one labeled “Alphabetical”. Clicking on this will bring up the same list, but with the films listed in alphabetical order. This allows you to quickly see if a film is on the list or not.

September 24, 2013 Update:

This sheet contains all 49 new films that were just added by the Tenth Edition of the book. By agreement with both the 1,001 Movies Blog Club, and the 1,001 Movies folks on Letterboxd, this sheet aligns across both areas by doing the following: 1. The order of the films from the Tenth Edition is used; 2. The films that have been removed from the books appear at the end of the year of their release, as originally printed in the earlier editions of the books; 3. The group entries (Olympia, Ivan the Terrible, the Toy Story trilogy, and The Lord of the Rings) have been broken into their component movies in this list and they appear together in the place where their group entry appears in the Tenth Edition.

These steps to align everyone required a complete renumbering of the entries in the list. For those of you who downloaded the earlier tracking sheet, this one now contains columns that show both the old and new numbers so that you can cross reference them.

The Tenth Edition fixed dozens of errors in the years of the films from the earlier texts, but some still remain. Comments have been added in the rightmost column for those entries that still remain in error.

Finally, I added a set of totals at the bottom of the Chronological tab that show which of the entries you have reviewed, if you are doing so.

October 21, 2014 Update:

With the latest additions the final 88 entries on the list had to be renumbered to stay consistent with the new method established last year with the Tenth Edition. The first 1,079 entries remained unchanged.

September 26, 2015 Update:

With the latest additions the final 82 entries on the list had to be renumbered to stay consistent with the new method established in 2013 with the Tenth Edition. The first 1,095 entries remained unchanged.

The same people have also published several smaller books titled 101 [genre] Movies to See Before You Die. Currently (July 2013) those genres are Action, Cult, Gangster, Horror, Sci-Fi, and War. I have transcribed those books into tracking lists and they appear below. While there is some crossover with the larger book, there are also many movies unique to these lists. I have a tracking sheet for those 348 unique movies at the bottom of this post. This tracking sheet also has the Netflix availability columns just like the larger list.

Since the six original lists are much smaller and a lot more manageable I just have the “Seen?” column in them and none of the Netflix availability ones. I do have a column indicating if this film is also in the larger 1,001 Movies list. Like the larger list they also have both Chronological and Alphabetical tabs.

The They Shoot Pictures Don’t They Top 1,000 movies list is the one on this site that is most heavily weighted towards “critics’ films”. (For the other end of the spectrum see some of the entries in the Miscellaneous post.) Like the 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die list, this one has also spurred people to see if they can complete the entire thing.

This list is comprised by weighting many critics “best of” lists and combining them all together to get the Top 1,000. It has been recalculated several times since it was first issued in 2006. This has resulted in a more volatile list than the 1,001 Movies one.

Since there is almost no way someone could see the entire list in a single year, I have added a list of the 435 films (as of this posting) that were on the list at one time, but are not on the most recent one. There is also a list of the "next 1,000" films. These are not ranked, but have tabs for alphabetical and chronological order.

In the main tracking sheet I have tabs that contain the current Top 1,000 in ranked order, alphabetical order, chronological order, descending runtime order, and alphabetical by director order.

For all of these, by placing a “1” in the “Seen?” column to indicate you have seen the film you will get a running total and percentage at the bottom of the sheet.

Of all the tracking lists on this site, this one is a unique creation of my own. I first discovered IMDB back in 1997. At the end of the year 1998 I printed off the Top 250 list in order to have as a list of recommended movies to possibly see in the coming year. I have continued to do this at every year end since. I have also found year end lists for 1996 and 1997. The result is a look back at the past and the trends among the movies that have made up the list.

One of the solid criticisms of the current Top 250 list is that it is too heavily weighted towards movies that have just been released. Because the number of votes a movie gets affects its overall position on the list, new movies will always have an advantage in appearing there. I decided to counter some of this voting bias by weighting movies by their position in the list across the entire 20 years that I have been tracking them.

You can view this result in the “Combined – Weighted” tab. At the top are the movies that have appeared on all 20 years’ lists. After that are the movies that appeared on 19 of the 20 lists, then 18 of the 20, etc. Within each of these year groupings are the average position of each movie across those years. The highest ranked film of each of these groupings is highlighted in green.

The entire list is comprised of 670 unique movies that have appeared on the year end Top 250 lists. These range all the way from The Shawshank Redemption with an average ranking of 1.70 across 20 years to Departures and Le Samourai which appeared on a single list in the 250th position.

The result is a Top 10 comprised of The Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Schindler's List, The Godfather Part II, Star Wars, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Pulp Fiction, Casablanca, The Empire Strikes Back, and Seven Samurai.

You may be wondering, “Why average the position in the list and not the overall rating?” The answer again goes back to the voting in recent years. There has been a tremendous amount of inflation in the ratings as more and more votes of “10” are given to movies.

In the 1998 list the top 4 movies had a rating of 8.4 and by position 28 on the list they were already down to 7.9. A rating of 7.6 got you in the Top 100 and a 7.4 got you in the Top 250. In the 2012 list the top two films had ratings of 9.2, it took an 8.3 to make the Top 100, and at least an 8.0 to even make the Top 250 list. Averaging the ratings would have meant the Top films from 1998 would barely even make the Top 100.

In addition to the "Consolidated – Weighted" list I also have tabs with the same films listed alphabetically, and I have tabs for each of the 20 years’ Top 250 lists.

This is really far more than just a tracking sheet. You could do any number of different analyses on the trends over the years. For instance, where possible I included the number of votes a movie had received. In 1998 The Shawshank Redemption had received 9,461 votes. In 2004 it was 135,457. In 2012 it was 881,947. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;">What has been the growth rate of voting over the years? Is it higher among a certain genre of films?

Because I include columns for all 20 years in the main combined lists, you can also see trends such as that with Almost Famous. It appeared on the 2000 list at position 52. It dropped a little each year until last appearing in position 214 in the 2005 list. This is an example of why I don’t get too worked up about new movies appearing on the list right away. My years on the site have allowed me to see the big picture. The films that are not that good (relative to the overall list) have a life cycle where they drop some each year before leaving the list.

Another trend you can see is the rise of a classic film as more and more movie lovers discover it. An example of this is The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. It has been on all 20 years’ lists, but it was in position 62 in 1998. By 2003 it was in position 25 and in 2007 it was in position 4, where it remained until 2012.

Finally, you will likely find these lists to be the answer to your question, “Why isn’t [insert movie name] on the list?” It may very well have been at one time. It may also return at some point. The 400 Blows is a good example. It was on the list from 1999 to 2007, dropped off in 2008, then returned in 2010, and even raised its position slightly in 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Feel free to use all of this information I have provided for your own analysis. Just please give credit to where you got it from.

Both the American and British Film institutes have published lists of the best movies their respective countries have to offer. I have compiled those various lists into tracking spreadsheets. Please note that the AFI included a few foreign movies with an American co-production and the BFI included films that were “culturally British”.

The AFI first produced a list of the 100 Best Films in 1998. It proved popular so they followed with several more lists. I have included all of the ones that are specific to individual movies. These are Laughs (2000), Thrills (2001), Passions (2002), Film Scores (2005), Musicals (2006), Cheers (2006), an updated list of the Top 100 Movies (2007), and Top 10 lists for 10 different genres (2008). I did not include the AFI lists of Actors, Actresses, Heroes, Villains, Songs, and Quotes since those were not one for one related to a movie.

Each of these lists has their own tab, which you will see at the bottom of the sheet. Clicking on any of these tabs will bring up that list. In addition, I have a Combined tab that brings all of these films into one alphabetical list with columns showing every list the movie appeared in and at what position. This resulted in a total of 412 unique movies across all of these lists.

By placing a “1” in the “Seen?” column to indicate you have seen the film you will get a running total and percentage at the bottom of the sheet.

The BFI has not been as prolific, but they issued their own Top 100 Culturally British movies in 1999. The tracking sheet for this includes Ranked and Alphabetical tabs. Each sheet has the same “Seen?” tracking column and total.

The BFI also issued a list of the Top 50 Films to See by the Age of 14. These are not specific to just British films. They only indicated which movies were in the Top 10 and just listed the other 40 alphabetically.

The Academy Awards are the oldest film awards in the business. The Oscar has been getting handed out since 1929. The Golden Globes have been handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since 1944. While the same film is often selected as the best by both organizations, there are also significant differences from time to time. The Golden Globes also split comedies and dramas into separate categories to ensure that comedies don’t get overlooked.

For all of these, by placing a “1” in the “Seen?” column to indicate you have seen the film you will get a running total and percentage at the bottom of the sheet.

Please note that the “Year” column in all of these sheets indicates the year the film won, not necessarily the year the film was released.

The first Oscars tracking sheet has tabs for the winners of each of the four categories where the film as a whole is honored. Those are the Picture, Documentary, Foreign Language Film, and Animated Film categories. By clicking on any of those tabs you will get a tracking sheet for each. There is also a Combined tab that lists all of these films alphabetically. The result is a list of 245 unique films that have won an Oscar over the years.

The second Oscars tracking sheet concentrates on the Best Picture category. In addition to the 87 winners it also includes every single film nominated for the award. There have been a total of 520 films nominated for Best Picture over the years. There are tabs at the bottom for (reverse) Chronological and Alphabetical tracking sheets. The winners for each year have an asterisk (*) after their name.

The third Oscars tracking sheet focuses on all the films whose directors or performers won an Oscar, even if the film itself did not get a nomination. This provides a list of 350 unique films. There are separate tabs for each category (Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress) as well as consolidated tabs sorted both alphabetically and chronologically.
The Golden Globes tracking sheet has tabs for the seven different categories of Best Film winners they have awarded over the years. Like the Oscars sheet there is also a Combined tab that lists every film alphabetically. This results in a list of 263 unique films that have received a Golden Globe over the years.

There are 25 different countries represented here, as well as two pan-continental film awards. I tried to track down any country that had had a regular film awards process for more than the last few years.

While doing this I found that both Wikipedia and IMDB are a mess in regards to some of their entries (especially Wikipedia). Where possible I verified the lists presented here on the web pages of those country’s film associations, but since I don’t speak dozens of foreign languages, I was not always able to do this. I have noted in some of the spreadsheets where lists may be off a little. If you have a definitive source for one of these and it differs from what I have here, please let me know in the comments.

It was a lot of work doing this, but on the plus side, after transcribing and translating these lists I now have a 5-10 word vocabulary in a couple dozen languages.

Because there were so many of them I did not embed the spreadsheets directly into this page. Instead I embedded links to the spreadsheets. By clicking on them you will be able to see/download the ones you want. For all of these, by placing a “1” in the “Seen?” column to indicate you have seen the film you will get a running total and percentage at the bottom of the sheet.

It feels as if at some point every town with a film projector and some spare money in the budget has hosted a film festival. I had to limit what festivals I included otherwise I would have never gotten this site off the ground. I have transcribed the Best Film winners from the five festivals that seem to have the largest impact on movie lovers and critics. I realize this is completely subjective on my part. If you feel there is an egregious omission, please let me know.

Various publications have taken it upon themselves to issue lists of the best films ever made. Included in this post are lists from The New York Times, Time Magazine, Time Out, Entertainment Weekly, Sight & Sound, and Empire Magazine. If you know of others that you feel would be good to include, please let me know in the comments.

The New York Times issued the second edition of their Top 1,000 films list in 2002. The list that they have on their website actually contains 1,002 films. In addition, this is the one list on my site that does not have the articles (a, an, the) placed at the end for alphabetizing since the titles of the movies were links to the individual NY Times reviews of those films and because they already had the films listed in correct alphabetical order. Please note that they did not list rankings for the films, so there is only the single tab for the alphabetical list.

In 2005 Time Magazine issued their list of the Top 100 Films ever made. They cheated a little bit by naming multiple films in a single entry (i.e. the three Lord of the Rings movies), so there are actually 106 films in their list. Like the NY Times, they also did not rank them, but merely listed them alphabetically.

Sight & Sound is a British monthly magazine. Once each decade they poll critics and directors on what they feel are the ten greatest films of all time. They then tabulate these votes and produce ranked lists for each. Because of more voters the Critics' list is the Top 250, while the Directors' list is the Top 100. The latest ranked lists were revealed in 2012. Each tracking sheet has tabs for the ranked list, an alphabetical list, and a chronological list.

Empire Magazine is a U.K. based publication. In 2008 they issued a list of the Top 500 films of all time. In 2010 they did the Top 100 world films, in 2011 they did the Top 100 British films, and in 2014 they did the Top 301 films of all time. Their lists are compiled mostly from their readers' votes. In the case of the Top 500 movies they also took opinions from filmmakers and critics. You will be able to tell pretty easily which selections came from the readers and which did not. The Top 100 World Films actually has 106 entries because they cheated and combined multiple films into single entries. All of these lists are weighted towards more recent films. Each has tabs for the ranked, alphabetical, and chronological versions of the lists.

Because there are so many lists here I have not embedded the spreadsheets directly in the post, except in the case of the National Film Registry. Instead each of these is a link that will take you to the actual tracking sheet to view or download it. For all of these, by placing a “1” in the “Seen?” column to indicate you have seen the film you will get a running total and percentage at the bottom of the sheet.

The National Film Registry is where culturally, esthetically, and historically important American films are preserved. Since 1989 up to 25 films that meet these criteria have been added each year to the registry.
